A supportive sports bra for 14F cupsize, is that even possible?

Why are most of the sports bras only available in smaller cup sizes? It almost seems as if it's not possible to make a supportive sports bra for 14F cupsize... is that true?

To answer this question it's best to step back and look at the design of a sports bra (or any bra for that matter) and its funcion.

Why do we wear a sports bra?

Without a properly fitted sports bra, breasts move too freely and may stretch the Cooper's ligaments and lead to sagging. Changes in weight and/or hormones: This includes fluctuations due to weight gain and loss due to dietary habits as well as pregnancy. ... With lower levels of elastin, the breasts droop and sag. [This also explains why you change cup sizes during your lifetime ]

Breasts don't have muscles, they are mostly fatty tissue and milk producing glands. The Cooper's ligaments (suspensory ligaments) are the connective tissue in between the fatty deposits in the breast that connect the breast to the muscle below and give the breast its shape.

The idea of a sports bra is to keep your breast tissue close to your body to minimise the amount of movement you get during your exercise. When you consider that with each step or jump your breast tissue moves at least 8 cm you realise that this is not easy.

Add to that the average weight of your breasts and you can understand why some thought needs to go into the design of a supportive sports bra for 14F cupsize or more.

(a Japanese division of a US lingerie brand created an infographic and this table of the weight of breasts, I bet you never knew that your F-cup breasts weigh the equivalent of a 3-month old kitten - aka 1180 grams)

What does a supportive sports bra for 14F cupsize look like?

  1. Wide underband that gives enough support for the breasts
  2. Wide, padded straps that don't dig into your shoulders and don't slide down
  3. An underwire that separates the breasts and gives structure to the bra (but make sure you get properly fitted so you wear the correct size)
  4. The bra doesn't restrict breathing and is not too tight around your torso/ribcage

(If you're REALLY interested in the science behind sports bra design for active women, you can read this 140 page theses by Kelly-Ann Bowles of the University of Wollongong. )

Also - it is important that a sports bra for a size 14F covers the breast tissue completely . The recommendation is to use a bra that uses encapsulation of the breast, rather than compression. Compression may work for smaller cup sizes but not for a size 14F as it won't give you enough support.

The Q-Linn Barcelona Bra is a supportive sports bra for 14F cupsizes - currently going up to 22F.

Converting European sizing to Australian sizing

Q-Linn is an Australian brand so it can be a little confusing to find your size.

For example the measurements you took are:

(A) 83 cm --> round down to 80cm

(B) 106cm --> round up to 107cm

Looking at the Q-Linn sizing table I would order the 80G size. This is equivalent to 14F in most Australian brands (but not all! so be careful with this. Don't make the assumption that because your current bra is 14F you can order the same size for your Q-Linn bra)

The Barcelona bra is the perfect choice for this size.

With the Barcelona bra it's important to always round up, and when in doubt go up a cup size. The way the cups in the Barcelona bra are designed it seems that for many women it is a small fit.
